AUGUST/SEPTEMBER on IN A MELLOW TONE

August 1 Listen Before You Buy: Ron Sweetman plays recent jazz releases by trumpeters Don Cherry, Vitali Golovnev & Thomas Heberer and pianists Michiel Borstlap, Ales D’Episcopo, Gil Evans, Jim Holman, Roberto Magris, Michael McNeill, Tyson Naylor, Alfredo Rodriguez, Gordon Sheard, the Silves Trio and Esbjorn Svensson.

August 8 Bill Evans: A recently discovered session by the Bill Evans Trio at the Top of the Gate in Greenwich Village from October, 1968. Bill Evans is joined by bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Marty Morell for two top-notch sets.

August 15 Leo Wadada Smith: This outstanding trumpeter’s new major work is entitled “Ten Freedom Summers”. He is accompanied by his own Golden Quartet/Quintet and by Southwest Chamber Music. Tonight’s program will feature this massive work.

August 22 Art Pepper Live: Live quartet recordings from Los Altos in 1975, Half Moon Bay in 1977 and Japan in 1978. Sidemen include Freddy Atwood, Brad Bilhorn, Carl Burnett, Smith Dobson, Tommy Gumina, Micho Leviev, Bob Magnusson and Jim Nichols.
August 29 She-Cats: Co-Host Anna Williams plays cuts by several female instrumentalists and vocalists who are at the top of their game, young - and not so young – lionesses, including Joëlle Léandre, Sheila Jordan and Esperanza Spalding.

September 5 Listen Before You Buy: Ron Sweetman plays recent releases by the big bands Ensemble X, Michael Gibbs, Chuck Jackson & John Tesh, singers David Basse, Steve Berndt, Lisa Kirchner, Sandra Marlowe, Christina Morrison, Danbiela Nardi, Rhiannon, Jennifer Scott, Virginia Schenck & Cassandra Wilson, and small groups led by percussionists Harris Eisenstadt, Derin Gray, Andrea Marcelli & Pete Zimmer.
September 12 Jumbie Label: Join Co-Host Jim Reil and CKCU alumnus Aidian Thomas as they feature artists and recordings on the Jumbie record label including the David Rogers Sextet, Imaginary Homeland - another David Rogers "musical project" which blends Celtic, West African and Appalachian folk traditions and Dallam-Dougou – a jazz band blending and improvising on West African and Hungarian folk forms.

September 19 September 19: Co-host Ron Steeds surveys jazz and blues recorded September 19 between 1928 and 2007. Expect to hear Charlie Johnson, Wingy Manone, King Pleasure, Quincy Jones, The Jazztet, Walter Benton, Carmen McRae, Don Cherry, Gary Burton, Zoot Sims & Jimmy Rowles, Dave Douglas, Matthias Lupri, CDB Trio
and Ken Vandermark’s Freefall, among others.

September 26 Out Of The Cool: Master arranger Gil Evans was born 100 years ago this past May. Co-Host Alnoor Allidina presents a look at this great Canadian jazz icon, drawing from his 1960s recordings on Impulse and Verve. We will also sample from Centennial, a collection of Evans' recently discovered works.
