December 8 Lula Reed: A singer with a distinctive style, who came from the church, found fame with R&B bandleader Sonny Thompson, but gave it all up to return to the church. We’ll hear her recordings from 1951 to 1962 for the King and Federal labels.

December 15 Ornette Coleman Quartet Reunion: The magnificent 1990 Italian concert by the reunited Ornette Coleman Quartet of Ornette Coleman [alto sax], Don Cherry [trumpet], Charlie Haden [bass] and Billy Higgins [drums].

December 22 Teddy Wilson: This elegant pianist in solo, trio, quartet, sextet and big band performances recorded between 1939 and 1983.

December 29 The Best of 2010: Ron’s choice of the best jazz and blues recordings that he acquired during 2010.

January 5 Listen Before You Buy: Recent jazz releases. Will be chosen from
Jason Adasiewicz, Alaniaris, Avishai Cohen, Tom Culver, Chris Dahlgn,
Exploding Star Orchestra, Tania Gill, Brad Goode, Phil Hawkins, Darcy Hepner,

January 12 Jim Reil: Co-Host Jim Reil introduces himself, musically speaking, with a taste of what you can expect from his future shows-from vintage Basie and Ellington to last month’s Vandermark 5 and Mary Halverson.

January 19 Sketches of Spain: Miles Davis and Gil Evans recorded these pieces in November 1959 and March 1960. Trumpeter Lew Soloff re-recorded five of them with Steve Richman conducting the Harmonie Ensemble New York in May 2008. We’ll compare the two recordings tune by tune.

January 26 Vocalese: Co-Host and singer Anna Williams brings us Vocalese: the Art and the Artists – tracing the art of Vocalese from the original solos to the singers’ versions with premier practitioners like King Pleasure,
Jon Hendricks, Kurt Elling and the Manhattan Transfer.

PLAYLIST for NOVEMBER 17, 2010

LARKIN’S JAZZ: A Proper box containing the favourite recordings of English poet/critic PHILIP LARKIN offers us the opportunity to enjoy some rarely-heard and beautifully-restored vintage jazz and blues recordings. Philip Larkin is widely regarded as the greatest poet to emerge in Britain in the second half of the twentieth century.
He was also a leading jazz critic and published a collection of his jazz criticism in 1970, called All What Jazz. He once said, "I can live a week without poetry but not a day
without jazz."

Larkin's Jazz was sponsored by the Larkin Society as part of the commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Larkin's death. It is edited by Trevor Tolley, formerly of Carleton University, and John White - both Larkin experts.

We’ll give you a preview of Ottawa multi-instrumentalist Linsey Wellman’s solo alto sax CD, which he’ll be launching at Club SAW tomorrow [November 18].
