February 17 Herbie Nichols: To complement Mark Miller’s recent book on pianist
Herbie Nichols, we’ll play Herbie’s quartet recordings from March 1952 and his trio recordings from May 1955, August 1955, April 1956 and November 1957.

February 24 Warne Marsh & Lee Konitz: The booking of the Warne Marsh-Lee Konitz Quintet to play in Copenhagen in December 1975 re-united tenor saxophonist Warne Marsh and alto saxophonist Lee Konitz, two students of pianist Lennie Tristano who hadn’t played together for at least twenty years. Everyone was happy with the results.

March 3 Listen Before You Buy: Recent jazz and blues releases in more adventurous styles by Jason Adasiewicz, Charlie Apicella, Ryan Blotnick, Phil Brown,
James Carney, Empirical, Charles Evans, Lori Freedman, Von Freeman, Gordon Grdina, Amy Horvey, Klaxon Gueule, Billy Lavender, Dana Reason, Aram Shelton
and Leo Wadada Smith.

March 10 Japanese Women Pianists: Our contribution to International Women’s Day will be a survey of Japanese Women Pianists, including Toshiko Akiyoshi,
Satoko Fujii, Hiromi, Keiko Matsui, Junko Onishi, Aki Takase and Eri Yamamoto.

March 17 Hakon Kornstad: We’ll focus on the leading Norwegian saxophonist
Hakon Kornstad, using his recordings made between 2000 and 2007.

March 24 Stan Tracey: The iconic English pianist, composer and band-leader’s recordings, from piano duets to Octets to his 20-piece Orchestra, recorded between 1976 and 2006 with sidemen Alan Barnes, Harry Beckett, Malcolm Griffiths,
Peter King, Evan Parker, Alan Skidmore, Art Themen, Keith Tippett and Don Weller.

March 31 Sonny Rollins & Don Cherry: The beautiful concert in Copenhagen on
January 15, 1963 by Sonny Rollins, Don Cherry, Henry Grimes and Billy Higgins.

Below you will find the playlist for the January 20 edition of In A Mellow Tone.
The January 20 and January 27 programs will be devoted to the amazing achievement of Alexander von Schlippenbach's Quintet [von Schlippenbach-piano; Axel Dorner-trumpet; Rudi Mahall-bass clarinet; Jan Roder-bass; Uli Jennessen-drums]. Their amazing achievement is the recording, over three CDs, of every published composition of Thelonious Monk.

At the end of tonight's program we'll try to squeeze in a cut by Jeri Brown, who is singing at Brookstreet Hotel on Friday and at Cafe Paradiso (with Roddy Ellias) on Saturday, and the January 30 concert at the NAC Fourth Stage by Donny McCaslin, John Geggie, Nancy Walker and Nick Fraser.
