March 9 Sax Appeal: Saxophonists Dmitry Baevsky, Jane Ira Bloom,
Alex Dean, Jake Fryer, Peter Macdonough, Mike Murley, Bud Shank,
Wil Swindler, Paul Van Kemenade and Chris Woodbury.

March 16 Henry Threadgill: Co-Host Jim Reil explores the career of seminal Chicago musician and composer Henry Threadgill through selections from the recent Mosaic 8-CD box set of Threadgill’s Columbia and RCA recordings. Outstanding and diverse music from one of the greats.

March 23 Ethiopian Jazz: Co-Host Alnoor Allidina presents two hours of Ethiopian jazz, focusing heavily on Ethio-jazz pioneer Mulatu Astatke.

March 30 March 30 Recordings: Co-Host Ron Steeds presents some of the jazz and blues recorded on March 30 between 1925 and 1996. We'll hear the Little Ramblers, Jimmy Noone, Jabbo Smith, Duke Ellington,
Johnny Griffin, David Murray & Dave Burrell, the Lounge Lizards and the Keith Jarrett Trio among others.

April 6 Listen Before You Buy: Recent jazz and blues releases. Will include the big bands of John Burnett, Joseph Daley & Mr. Ho, a feature on Ottawa musician Dean Pallen, and the blues of Papa Chubby,
Damon Fowler, Buddy Guy, James Kinds & John Studebaker.

April 13 Ellington at the Blue Note: An intimate session by the Ellington Orchestra at the Blue Note in Chicago [one of the Duke’s favourite venues] in August of 1959. The band included soloists
Cat Anderson, Shorty Baker, Harry Carney, Paul Gonsalves,
Jimmy Hamilton, Johnny Hodges, Quentin Jackson, Ray Nance,
Russell Procope, Billy Strayhorn, Clark Terry, Sam Woodyard and of course the Duke himself.

April 20 April 20: Co-Host Ron Steeds gives us a historical overview of jazz and blues recordings made on April 20.

April 27 FIMAV: A preview of some of the artists who will be appearing at the Festival International de Musique Actuelle in Victoriaville between May 19 and May 22. Will include Ab Baars, Anthony Braxton,
Peter Brotzmann, Lori Freedman, Mats Gustafsson, Ig Hanneman,
Marilyn Lerner, Ken Vandermark, Annie Whitehead and Wolter Wierbos.

PLAYLIST for FEBRUARY 16, 2011

BLACK HISTORY MONTH: JOHNNY COLES: This very adaptable black trumpeter and flugelhorn player managed to work successfully with such diverse leaders as Ray Charles, Duke Ellington, Gil Evans and Charles Mingus. I’m sure that you’ve got something by him in your LP or CD collection with at least one of these bands. But did you know that he made at least three recordings as a leader? We’ll hear cuts from these three CDs, made in 1961, 1963 and 1982.

During the program, we’ll introduce you to PETR CANCURA, the new Programming Manager for the Ottawa International Jazz Festival, and we’ll play you a sample cut from Gord Grdina’s East Van Strings, who will be playing at the National Arts Centre Fourth Stage on February 21.

PLAYLIST for FEBRUARY 9, 2011

BLACK HISTORY MONTH: Frederick Douglass and Martin Luther King. We will hear some speeches by writer Frederick Douglass with musical accompaniment by the Tyrone Brown Ensemble, hear a couple of early protest songs from Big Bill Broonzy and Louis Armstrong, hear some of the gospel music which strengthened the resolve of the civil rights movement played by the Marcus Shelby Orchestra, listen to a sermon by activist Martin Luther King with musical accompaniment by John Hollenbeck, and finish with two more inspirational songs from Marcus Shelby.

During the program, we’ll tell you about a possibility of attending a private concert by Laila Biali on February 10, and we’ll play you a sample cut from Gord Grdina, who will be playing at the NAC Fourth Stage on February 21.
