PLAYLIST for FEBRUARY 16, 2011

BLACK HISTORY MONTH: JOHNNY COLES: This very adaptable black trumpeter and flugelhorn player managed to work successfully with such diverse leaders as Ray Charles, Duke Ellington, Gil Evans and Charles Mingus. I’m sure that you’ve got something by him in your LP or CD collection with at least one of these bands. But did you know that he made at least three recordings as a leader? We’ll hear cuts from these three CDs, made in 1961, 1963 and 1982.

During the program, we’ll introduce you to PETR CANCURA, the new Programming Manager for the Ottawa International Jazz Festival, and we’ll play you a sample cut from Gord Grdina’s East Van Strings, who will be playing at the National Arts Centre Fourth Stage on February 21.
