JUNE & JULY on IN A MELLOW TONE

June 6 Ottawa International Jazz Festival: Ron Sweetman introduces many of the artists appearing at this year’s Festival, which runs from June 21 to July 1. Will include the Fellowship Band, John Surman, Marc Ribot, Barry Guy, Ziggy Marley, Branford Marsalis, Joey Calderazzo, Francois Houle, Benoit Delbecq, Bill Frisell & Jack DeJohnette. June 10 Black & Blues: Ron Sweetman stands in for host John Tackaberry. He’ll be playing recordings by Champion Jack Dupree, B.B. King, Percy Mayfield, Brownie McGhee, Lloyd Price, Jimmy Reed, Little Richard, Guitar Slim, Lightnin’ Slim, Sonny Terry, Joe Turner and Big Joe Williams. June 13 Listen Before You Buy: Ron Sweetman plays recent jazz and blues releases by Cannonball Adderley, Peter Appleyard, Susie Arioli, Eric Bibb, Eddie Campbell, Cynthia Felton, Sue Foley, Benny Goodman, Studebaker John, Peter Karp, Gregoire Maret, Pinetop Perkins, Christine Reisner and Toots Thielemans. June 20 Elton Dean’s Ninesense: An historic concert from 1979, with Harry Beckett, Mark Charig, Nick Evans, Radu Malfatti, Harry Miller, Louis Moholo, Alan Skidmore and Keith Tippett. June 27 Ottawa Bluesfest: CKCU’s blues guru John Tackaberry identifies and plays the most interesting artists appearing at Bluesfest between July 4 and July 15. July 4 Listen Before You Buy: Ron Sweetman plays recent jazz releases, with an emphasis on guitarists and pianists. July 11 Mike Osborne: A recently-discovered trio concert in Birmingham from 1976, with sidemen Tony Levin and Harry Miller.
