PLAYLIST for APRIL 2, 2008

LISTEN BEFORE YOU BUY: Eleven recent jazz and blues issues.
We start with ‘twenties-style jazz from tuba/leader Mike Walbridge, and proceed into the ‘thirties with banjoist/leader Cynthia Sayer. Then it’s time for three singers, Melody Breyer-Grill, Elli Fordyce and Betty Harris. A plug for Lenny Breau at the GCTC in Ottawa leads us to bassist/leader Howard Britz and a more contemporary sound. Now the gentlemen get their chance to sing; we’ll contrast classically-trained Gregory Hickman-Williams with back-alley-trained bluesman Little Arthur Duncan. Unconventional music comes from the aptly-named Ironica Orchestra, and then it’s time for two flute-playing leaders. Firstly, Keith Marks and his Foreign Funk, and then we take the program out with two exciting cuts by the dynamic Chicago group led by Nicole Mitchell.
