PLAYLIST for MAY 20, 2009

CHRIS McGREGOR: Sometime in 1969, South African pianist/composer Chris McGregor participated in two recording sessions in London for Polydor with the cream of the South African exiles and the most adventurous young British musicians. The South African exiles were Chris, Mongezi Feza, Louis Moholo, Dudu Pukwana, the British musicians were Evan Parker, John Surman & Danny Thompso, and expatriate American Barre Phillips played bass on some tracks. The results of the two sessions were four tunes by a trio of Chris, Barre and Louis, and five tunes by a septet of Chris, Mongezi, Dudu, Evan, John, Louis, Barre or Danny.

For reasons that are not clear, none of this music was issued at the time, and these recordings have remained an intriguing and elusive mystery until 2008, when they was issued as two CDs by Fledgling Records of London [www.thebeesknees.com].

As well as playing each of these exciting CDs in full, we’ll take a couple of moments to listen to Kevin Turcotte, who joins John Geggie and Ted Quinlan on the NAC Fourth Stage on May 23, and Mike Murley, David Occhipinti and the Jireh Gospel Choir, who will be part of the 1000 Islands Jazz Festival from May 29 to June 6.

THE BLUES BOX: The Danish record company Storyville has issued a seven CD and one DVD boxed set appropriately named THE BLUES BOX. The box contains recordings made in Denmark and Switzerland in the ‘fifties, ‘sixties and ‘seventies by visiting American blues artists, generally of the pre-Chicago generation. Of the nineteen artists featured tonight, two play harmonica, seven are guitarists, and ten are pianists; all of them sing. I have tried to choose cuts where these artists perform their own compositions, and preferably lesser-known compositions, although in the blues composition is a pretty fluid concept.
