May 13 Blues Box: The Danish Storyville label has put out a 7-CD set appropriately called “The Blues Box” containing the work of 29 blues artists, including
Big Bill Broonzy, Champion Jack Dupree, Sleepy John Estes, Cousin Joe,
Lonnie Johnson, Robert Lockwood Junior, Jay McShann, Little Brother Montgomery, Memphis Slim, Sunnyland Slim, Otis Spann, Roosevelt Sykes, Sippie Wallace,
Big Joe Williamsand Sonny Boy Williamson. You are invited to this blues feast.

May 20 Chris McGregor Discoveries: Two previously unreleased Chris McGregor sessions have been discovered and have recently appeared on CD. They are “Our Prayer” by the Chris McGregor Trio [Chris, Barre Phillips & Louis Moholo] from 1968/69 and “Up To Earth” by the Chris McGregor Septet [Chris, Mongezi Feza, Louis Moholo, Evan Parker, Dudu Pukwana, John Surman and Danny Thompson] from 1968.

May 27 Benny Goodman/Charlie Christian: On May 30 the jazz world will celebrate the 100th birthday of clarinetist, composer and band-leader Benny Goodman.
In this centennial tribute we’ll concentrate on the recordings he made between 1939 and 1941 while guitar pioneer Charlie Christian was in his band.

June 3 Listen Before You Buy: Recent jazz and blues releases by Roger Davidson,
Emma Lee, Dennis Gonzales, Azar Lawrence, Joelle Leandre, Kelly Joe Phelps,
Quartet San Francisco, Lenore Raphael and Dave Siebels.

PLAYLIST for APRIL 22, 2009

STICKMAN: Neil Haverstick, known professionally as Stickman, takes us into the world of micro-tonality. He plays jazz and blues on acoustic and electric guitars modified to have 19 or 34 equal steps to the octave, which allows greater variety while still preserving most of our common consonant intervals. We’ll be hearing from four of Stickman’s CDs; STICK MAN from 2005, MYSTERIOUS FEMALE from 2005/2006, WAY DOWN BY THE MISSISSIPPI from early 2008, and SPIDER from later in 2008.

We’ll plug Ndidi Onukwulu’s concert tomorrow @ L.A.C., Chris Gestrin [who’s with John Geggie on April 25 @ NAC4], Francois Houle’s recital at the National Gallery on April 27 and Duane Andrews’ performance on April 30 at the Black Sheep Inn.

PLAYLIST for APRIL 15, 2009

BIRTH OF THE COOL: The three Birth of the Cool recording sessions took place approximately sixty years ago. There were three sessions, on January 29, 1949,
April 22, 1949 and March 9, 1950. Four tunes were cut at each session, making a total of twelve tunes.
Forty-three years later, participant Gerry Mulligan re-recorded each of these tunes
with some alterations to the arrangements. On Wednesday we’ll play each tune, in the order in which they were actually recorded, immediately followed by Gerry Mulligan’s 1992 version.
We’ll also plug the Impressions in Jazz Orchestra’s April 16 concert @ D.C.U.C.
and Roddy Ellias’ encounter with fellow guitarist Lucas Haneman at the Café Paradiso on April 17.
