PLAYLIST for OCTOBER 21, 2009

MADE IN EUROPE: Recordings made by American jazz artists while in Europe.
We start with bassist Red Mitchell and tenor saxophonist, who thoughtfully
recorded our theme song in Stockholm in April 1980. In strides pianist Ralph Sutton,
recorded in Copenhagen in May 1977, playing three early jazz favourites –
Old Fashioned Love, If I Could Be With You and At Sundown, followed by another pianist, Duke Jordan, who in Copenhagen in October 1993 recorded No Problem, Parisian Hop, Two Loves and Night Walk.

We pause to sample two upcoming Ottawa concerts, by the Geggie Project with Marilyn Crispell [October 31 at the NAC Fourth Stage], and by Rake-Star and a Gamelan group [October 27 at the NAC Fourth Stage].

Back to our opening duo, Red Mitchell and Warne Marsh for some more from that April 1980 session, namely Little Willie Leaps and Hot House. Cornetist “Wild Bill” Davison now joins pianist Ralph Sutton to shake the dust off two old favourites – Blue Room and Everybody Loves My Baby.

The remainder of the program features tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin in three Copenhagen recording sessionput together in a box and entitled With Love.
Body and Soul and Wee Dot date from December 1964, Slukeater Blues from July 1989 and the final couple from July 1984, where he is joined by fellow tenor saxophonist Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis on Lester Leaps In and Intermission Riff.
